Grief Companion

"To 'listen' to another's soul into a condition of disclosure and discovery may be almost the greatest service that any human being ever performs for another."

- Douglas Steer -

We live in a grief-avoidant society. We have forgotten how to honor our losses. We have forgotten the wisdom and healing that is available through fully living the grieving and mourning process. We have forgotten how to support others in their journey with grief.

Society gives us cues that we are to suck it up and get on with life. And yet, when your loved one has died you know nothing will ever be “normal “again. There is no way to be the person that you were before your loss. The pain of grief challenges us to feel, to remember, to reach out to others for support, to search for meaning, and to develop a new self-identity.

It is important to distinguish grief from mourning. Grief refers to all the internal thoughts and feelings associated with a loss. Mourning is the outward expression of your grief. You cannot think your way through grief! You must mourn your losses in order to integrate them, and that means you need to express the grief. Your grief can be expressed in endless ways. Talking about it, crying, exercising, journaling, praying, meditating, creating artwork, being a volunteer, or holding ceremony. There is wisdom in knowing when to take a break from your grief and allow yourself to enjoy life.

I am a compassionate companion, who:

  • Perceives grief as a natural and appropriate response to a loss

  • Creates sacred space and encourages expression of emotions

  • Guides exploration of avenues to express your grief

  • Uses various techniques such as meditation, focused breathing, music, energy work, and aromatherapy to balance and support your energy field to create a sense of relaxation and peace.

  • Teaches techniques for a personal healing practice. This means giving you exercises, activities and mindsets you can practice every day to assist with grief and anxiety. Learning the skills to navigate your grief gracefully can provide a sense of self-mastery and lifelong resilience.

Life is full of losses, from the changing of the seasons, roles and relationships that come and go, moving through stages of our life, and eventually facing our death. Through each cycle we are challenged to grow into a deeper understanding of who we are and why we are here. Throughout life, we experience change as loss. We can choose to grieve our losses, seek to learn from them and move forward as a stronger person. Or we can stay stuck in the past, being resentful and unhappy. Learning to grieve well means learning to live fully.
